Culture of Innovation at Amazon

Customers often ask us how they can innovate "like Amazon". From its humble beginnings as a startup in a garage, Amazon has not only innovated across e-commerce, but also introduced new, diverse businesses beyond e-commerce. Over the years, Amazon has improved its ability to take on hard problems and find innovative ways to solve them.

When technology becomes a utility, it becomes ubiquitous, allowing more people to participate in innovation. The core mechanism to help teams identify & drive pioneering innovations to scale is called “working backwards”. It forces teams to get the most difficult discussions out of the way early and starts with the need to fully understand what the product’s value proposition will be.

From the organizational perspective, authority is decentralized to single-threaded owners leading small, empowered teams that own what they create.

We will discuss how Amazon approaches innovation, with its mechanisms, culture, organization and architecture.
Feras Alsamawi

Feras studied Industrial IT-Engineering and Finance as well as International Business at the Technical University of Berlin and Aarhus School of Business.

He worked for several years in Management Consulting with focus on Business / Big Data Analytics and a Silicon Valley based Software Company before joining Amazon Web Services to lead the Digital Innovation program for Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2016.

From production data to business value

Industry 4.0 is a term that is used for the digital transformation of manufacturing and production processes in factories. Since the birth of Industry 4.0 in year 2011 the dialogue have moved from buzz words like IIOT, digital twins & IA/ML to a more mature approach focusing on real business outcome such as production efficiency and quality yield. I this session you will hear what AWS is doing to help manufacturing companies turning shop floor data into measureable business outcomes.
Henrik Vikberg

Henrik Vikberg started his career at a machine builder specialized in packaging solutions for newspapers. After that he has worked for a number of industrial automation technology providers such as Omron, Siemens and Beckhoff in various positions. AutoCoding Systems showcases the latest innovations in 4Sight, its unique inspection solution for SICK 2D and 3D cameras

AutoCoding Systems launched their new automatic print inspection solution, 4Sight in 2019 offering a unique method for code inspection, working with any brand of industrial printer and associated marking technologies. 4Sight is often integrated to the printer itself enabling the camera and inspection parameters to automatically change to the correct configuration when the message changes. The solution has proved particularly successful as it negates the need for OCR which is a real strength when inspecting “real world” code quality. Since its launch, new developments have been made to the software, extending its inspection capability.  4Sight now offers barcode inspection, packaging verification, 3D dimensioning and “Classify” histogram comparison. 4Sight forms part of a suite of modules within the AutoCoding packaging line automation solution.  The core AutoCoding product automatically sets up and controls packaging line devices without operator involvement, thereby reducing the risk of coding and packaging errors.  As the AutoCoding system is connected to every line device, it is also best placed to add further value.  Applications such as Paperless Quality, Line Performance Reporting (OEE) and Inspection Reporting can easily be added to create a fully integrated solution for the packaging line.
Mike Hughes

Mike has led AutoCoding Systems from its inception in 2005, having spent 5 years as Managing Director of a global coding and labelling company.  Here he gained invaluable experience in the global coding and OEM market-place where AutoCoding Systems operates.  He established successful business relationships with many of the leading coding, inspection and packaging machinery suppliers thereby ensuring we can offer robust automation solutions to our customers.  Mike has overseen the continual development of AutoCoding’s packaging line automation solutions into what are now considered to be “best in class”, controlling and monitoring devices on over 1,000 packaging lines throughout the UK, US, Australia and South-East Asia.

Merging Data, Fusing AI

We live in a data-driven world where more sensors and IoT devices are monitoring behavior of man and machines and virtually every movement onboard vehicles, across intersections, within factories and throughout cities, giving rise to a flood of data. In this talk we present DeepTrace, a hybrid technology that comprise of multiple AI agents living within “decentralized” edge devices and connected to SICK sensors (3D vision, LIDAR and others) and capturing rapidly changing events in real-time and preforming a wide variety of tasks such as detecting pedestrians, counting passengers and predicting failure, amongst other things. With more data and information coalesced and ingested into the cloud for further processing by a “centralized” AI, the level of intelligence continues to climb up the strategic value chain. Through this break away from the traditional centralized computing scheme generated insights serve a bigger purpose from enhancing, for example, the efficiency of public transportation, safety of our roads and driving autonomous vehicles and smart cities of the future.

"Rocket Science" or just “standard”? - Digitalization and data analytics (AI) in Automation Technology

The use of dashboards, systematic data analysis and even artificial intelligence in automated production technology has increased significantly in recent years. The motivation for this is simple: to increase OEE. Once data and the knowledge of its correlation are available in a machine, predictive analysis of machine behavior can be performed. Sounds simple, but is often not so simple when automation knowledge and data science knowledge, have to work together. What is the current situation in the market and how will data analytics and artificial intelligence drive production technology and automation in the future? As "Rocket Science" technology or as "standard"?

Let's Build Data Spaces! Sharing Industrial Data Without Losing Control

The International Data Spaces Association is developing a standard for secure data spaces - the IDS standard.

Let's imagine what it will look like in five years when the EU strategy for data has been implemented and companies have regained control over their data. What is the basis for this transformation that companies will go through?

It's he concept of data spaces: Protected environments in which participants can freely share data by adhering to clear rules that protect data sovereignty, ensure transparency and fairness, and thus generate economic value.

Data spaces provide data sovereignty - a great benefit in itself and a game changer for the data economy of the future.

IDSA member SICK has created scenarios for data spaces, such as the Horizontal Supply Chain Collaboration. It impressively shows how data exchange along logistics and production processes generates a data value chain and thus business value.

Connecting OT to the Cloud – The Basic Ingredients

When looking at an IIoT solution, attention is focused on the solution and the benefits. Discussions usually center on the Cloud because the measurable added value is created in it. But the fact that the desired value creation depends on data is pushed into the background. This data must first be obtained in the field and forwarded to the Cloud. If semantic information is now required in addition to the raw data, the Digital Twin can come into action and expertly demonstrate its strengths. The presentation shows which concepts are necessary to supply an Industrial IoT solution with data and how the Digital Twin is to be categorized.
